The Duke University Biology Department loaned a titan arum for the Gardens to display as it blooms. Come visit this plant in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden and witness a rare blooming event! According to the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew:“Amorphophallus titanum (titan arum): The titan arum is a giant among plants, with a massive flowering structure that rises some three metres above the ground. Its flowering is rare and unpredictable, and always grabs the headlines.About this speciesThe titan arum produces one of the largest flowering structures and one of the foulest odours in the plant kingdom. Many of the 170 or so species of Amorphophallus produce a variety of obnoxious odours ranging from rotting meat, dung and rancid cheese to a nauseating gaseous stench. Their size does not always equate to their ability to generate a stink. Some Amorphophallus species, however, produce pleasant odours; for example, A. haematospadix smells of bananas while A. dunnii has the odour of freshly chopped carrots.”This amazing plant will be on display at the Burpee Learning Center in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden, Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
