Dos and Donts and Tips

 •       Do make a commitment. Don’t engage in social media if you cannot spend the time with it (at least 1-2 hrs week), probably more in the beginning while building a base and learning.

•       Do pick just 1, maybe 2 social media’s to start. Master those first.

•       Don’t let weeks/months go between posts

•       Don’t just promote or post sales of your products/services etc. Be interactive and engaging. Promote others, educate your customers.

•       Do not post negative rants, keep it professional and positive. Never trash the integrity or quality of your competitors, even if it’s true.

•       Do not post to the same social media while another post of yours is alive. Keep them 3 hrs apart.

•       Do put yourself in your customer’s shoes and build your marketing brand around what you would want and expect yourself.

•       Do provide authentic, relevant, rich content that serves the customer by educating how you can make their life better with facts and articles about your industry others wrote, not just about your specific product/service.

•       Do promote other people, companies, products and services that have both served you well and are leaders in your field you most want to emulate.

•       Authentic, real time responses on your sites will bring both satisfied and unsatisfied customers. Be ready, be proactive, and get prepared to provide immediate responses for the public to see.

•       Do be honest, use it to your advantage by being humble and helpful. If you mess up, own up to it and make it right. People don’t buy only for your product or services, they buy into the whole package of customer service.

•       If the manual interaction proves to be too much, wait at least 3 mos. before hiring a virtual assistant or purchasing software to automate your posts (ex: Hootsuite).

•       Don’t replace social media with real person to person outreach with your customers. Nothing is better than the real YOU!
