Animazement

Twenty-three events, several of which are four to five days in duration, will bring more than 22,000 guests to the Raleigh Convention Center for 25 days in May. The purposes of the events are extremely far afield.

The month begins with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. The month ends with the presentation of the Pinnacle Business Awards by the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

Four days near the end of the month will see 7,500 exuberates congregating in the convention center for Animazement, a fan-run anime convention celebrating popular Japanese visual culture in all forms.

As fanciful as that is, don’t get the wrong idea; the Raleigh Convention Center also will be hosting some earnestly serious engineering and scientific types this merry month. For three days 500 folks will be delving into continuous emissions monitoring equipment with the goal of deriving solutions to prevailing problems. The Electric Power Research Institute and Progress Energy are hosting the meeting.
Mid-month EarthScope will hold its national meeting. The 300 attending will be “investigating the internal structural dynamics and history of the North American continent.”

That’s a seriously diverse line-up.
